Fuel Efficiency

Industrialised countries are making a big effort to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and are increasingly focusing on the development of clean energy technologies.
New and innovative technical solutions are needed to improve energy efficiency.
Through our continuous investment in technological research we are also developing new generation combustion technologies and new concepts of engines, aiming at finding solutions to achieve ultra-low CO2 emissions and high thermal efficiency vehicles for the future.
Pre-set objectives regarding fuels:

  • Optimisation of fuel economy.
  • Maximisation of cost-benefit ratio when the technology to improve fuel efficiency is assessed.
  • Adoption of the most efficient strategies to achieve performance, fuel saving and CO2 objectives.
  • Planning for low-cost production, characteristics, fuel saving and low emissions.
  • Thermal and mechanical development aimed at energy saving.
  • Standard calibration of engine and vehicle.

Fuels and Combustible

      The categories of fuels and combustible gases are many, among the most important ones we can mention:
  • for the automotive sector: petrol, diesel fuels, LPG, natural gas (which are generally available at the petrol stations);
  • for industrial application and heating systems: petrol, diesel fuels, fuel oils, bunker;
  • for aeronautics: kerosene.

All these products, for the correct functioning of the devices/engines in which they are used, must have certain characteristics – commonly called “specifications” – that are tested by means of pre-set processes and standards, which are also called “methods”.

      One example of specifications is the reference standards for fuels for automotive use:
  • EN228 (for petrol)
  • EN590 (automotive diesel fuel)

In these documents there are the minimum characteristics that, as prescribed by law, fuels must respect in order to be marketed, as well as the methods that the laboratories must adopt to measure these parameters.
